Doing A Winter Ski Season Abroad

There's nothing as exciting as being able to travel abroad for an extended period of time to experience another country and their culture. Doing a ski season abroad is a wonderful way to have this experience and to create memories that will last a lifetime.

Each winter season there are countless opportunities available in all of the top resorts whether it be in the USA, Canada, Europe, New Zealand or even Japan! Each of these countries has numerous resorts looking to hire reliable staff who are hard working and enthusiastic about doing a ski season overseas.

If this is something you have always dreamed of doing then we would urge you to go for it but here are some things to consider first.

Legal Stuff

Unfortunately you can't just travel around from country to country working anywhere you want, so you need to do a little research and find out what the visa requirements are for the country you wish to work in and if you will be eligible for one of the work visas.

For example many of the ski resorts in North America will hire staff on J1 or H2B visas, these are just short term visas which are granted to individuals from abroad so that they can work in the US for a limited timeframe. If you are not familiar with these types of visas and want to work in the US, do some research before you start applying for jobs. The same goes for other countries around the world, take some time to check out the visa requirements and see what is required legally to work in a ski resort in that country.

If you are in Europe one good thing is that all of the counties such as France, Italy, Austria and Switzerland are all in the EU. This means if you are British or Spanish or German resident and would like to go abroad to one of these countries to work in their ski resorts then you don't have to worry about a work visa.

Cultural Difference

Be prepared for some cultural differences, diet, social activities, daily schedule all of that kind of thing can be different when working abroad so do a little bit of research and make sure you know exactly what you are getting yourself in to. Also, go abroad with an open mind and be ready to accept other cultures and ways of doing things.

Money, Money, Money

Most ski resort jobs don't pay a fortune so we would recommend saving up some money and making sure you have a back up supply of funds before you go abroad. There is nothing worse than being in a wonderful ski resort, or any other destination, and not being able to do some fun activity due to lack of funds! Also, it is a good idea to have some extra cash saved up in case you absolutely hate being in the location you are and need to get home, if you don't have access to additional funds you would not be able to change travel arrangements etc.
