Camp Cayuga was established in 1957 and named after the Cayuga Indian Tribe, which occupied the region because of its rich wildlife and natural beauty. The camp is located in northeastern Pennsylvania in the Pocono Mountains. The camp encompasses 350 acres of wooded estate just outside the village of Honesdale, which is a 3 hour drive from New York and Philadelphia.
At Camp Cayuga, the focus is on the development of new skills, the sharpening of old skills, the appreciation of nature, and the beginning of lifetime friendships. Boys and girls come from all over the country to attend Camp Cayuga. In 2013 campers came from 26 different states. Staff members come from far and wide as well, including all over the U.S, Spain, France, Switzerland, Venezuela, Japan, Dominican Republic, United Kingdom, Italy, Russia, Monaco, and Thailand.
With a wide variety of athletic activities, Camp Cayuga’s campers are encouraged to focus on self-improvement versus competition. For this reason, Camp Cayuga aims to employ staff members that have experience both playing and instructing/coaching children in the same sport/activity. They aim to combine recreational playing time with quality instruction. Instructors are expected to prepare a lesson plan for each activity they have been hired to teach, and to tailor this lesson plan for age and skill-level appropriateness. Instructors with current certifications, such as first-aid and CPR are also preferred.
Staff are also expected to assist with general counselor duties, such as supervising campers at all times, participating and assisting campers and other staff, build a relationship with campers, partake in rotating duties (dining hall, wakeup duty, meal serving duty, etc.), lookout duty, office duty, evening activities program, special events and trips program, and overseeing tasks associated with the cleanliness of the cabin, campers, and self.
Counselors must have completed one (1) year of college/university or must be at least 19 years of age, with the average age being 21 years old. International applicants must apply through a J-1 Visa Sponsorship organization, such as Stars N Stripes Summer Camp Staffing.
In addition to earning a salary, counselors also receive housing, meals, and laundry services, days off and the lifetime reward of making a positive impact on the lives of campers.
